The little time I stopped to think about R. Williams’ death was a sea of sadness. How can someone who makes “humor” his life end up depressed and hanged?!
On one side I see the evangelical community busy defining the destiny of the man’s soul. “Crucifying” him for not accepting the one who was crucified.
On the other side I see my friends my age, work partners, atheists, agnostics, and the like. People who judge that human life and a mouse’s are equal. That there’s nothing to do after and that there was nothing before there was something.
I think a bit of meditation fits for both sides. If you are Christian, and judge yourself to have the answer to all the questions that can lead another human being to deep depression, get down from your pedestal of perfection and go cry the pains of your neighbor, share your experiences, and distribute the hope you have.
On the other hand, you agnostic, atheist, so sure about not being sure about anything. As much or more radical than some believers when it comes to your faith in science, in proof and in tests — get down from your pedestal, make room for hope, faith, and love. Share that with whoever is by your side.
Regardless of the room we choose to live in, the living room we share is the same, and we spend more time in this living room than in the bedroom. May we transform this living room into a better place, always noticing those who slowly start to hide under the sofa, out of fear of the light.
May God have mercy on us.
