I. If God does not exist, then all human life as well as each individual will be destroyed.
II. If there is no God and there is no life after death, then life has no:
- A. Meaning
- Without immortality a life has no significance and makes no difference to the destiny of the world.
- B. Purpose
- Without immortality our destiny is extinction through death.
- Without a God there is no purpose for us to exist or to have come to this world.
III. It is impossible to live consistently and happily looking at the world from an atheistic point of view.
- A. If we live happily as atheists, it is because inconsistently we have created for ourselves a meaning and a purpose, even though it has no foundation.
- B. If we live consistently as atheists, we must be deeply unhappy and even somewhat desperate because we know that our lives are meaningless, useless and without purpose.
IV. Biblical Christianity challenges this way of looking at life.
- A. According to Biblical Christianity, God exists and life does not end at death.
- B. Biblical Christianity affirms that there are sufficient conditions for a life with Meaning and Purpose: God and immortality.
- C. Biblical Christianity offers a structure in which we can live consistently and happily.
- D. That being so, why not give a second chance to analyze the truth offered by Biblical Christianity?
The Success of Biblical Christianity
Biblical Christianity succeeds exactly where atheism fails.
Now, none of this proves that Biblical Christianity is true. The atheist may claim that I have embraced a Noble Lie and that thus I am deceiving myself. Yes, we should examine more closely the arguments against the existence of God. But for now, at least we have to make our alternatives clear:
If God does not exist, then life is futile. If God exists, then life has meaning.
Only the second of these two alternatives allows us to live happily and consistently. So there is an enormous difference whether God exists or not.
Furthermore, it seems to me that even if the evidence for these two options were exactly equal, a rational person would choose the option of believing in God. Because, if the evidence is equal, it seems to me completely irrational to prefer death, futility and destruction instead of life, meaning and happiness. As Pascal once said, in this case, “we have nothing to lose and the infinite to gain”.
My objective, for now, is more modest than to convince you that God exists, I just hope that you think about this problem, to realize that the matter of the existence of God has profound consequences for our lives and that we cannot afford the privilege of being indifferent about it.
